Here's what we (as in the royal we) have come up with so far:

As for Childermass's part, he's going to have a dream detailing that teh Gentleman is waking. However, he has no frame of reference for this scary creature, so he could very well put it down to that dodgy pheasant he ate that night, so he'll need somebody who's down with it to tell him, "Duude, don't let him get out/Help us stop him!"

Which is where Jonathan Strange and Norrell come in- using the method of the birds/stones/dirt/messages from the dark, could Strange let Childermass know he needs to be stopped and the like? This way, I can start getting the ball rolling on my part. :D

How might Strange find out about the disturbance in the first place himself? Or would the both of them have dreams you mean? There's always the chance that Strange could actually get INTO Childermass' dreams (because he's good at that sorta thing!) but I'd just need to figure out why he'd bother in the first place. Hm.

Would the Gentleman be after Vinculus? The latter is the former's greatest enemy and all. ... though I suppose that's up to whoever plays the Gentleman. DOUBLE HM.

I'm.... not entirely sure how Jonathan would find out, but I do like the idea of Strange worming into Childermass's dreams. Possibly as a way to initially contact him so he could do something on the outside to get Strange and Norrell out of the darkness, but then he recognizes the Gentleman? And then contacts Childermass in some way to get him out so they can stop the fairy that will probably try to put a stop to the magic?

I'm not sure why the Gentleman would be after Vinculus- unless he had an outright desire to destroy the prophecy. Basically Vinculus doesn't actually have any power except for magical scribbles, so I suppose if he were to figure out the prophecy changed, then he might. But aside for hanging Vinculus in the tree for the sheer sake of being challenged, I'm pretty sure Vinculus wasn't his enemy? Maybe I'm forgetting though, so I'll stuff my foot in my mouth here.

Ha, nah, no worries -- I just read the book over while delayed at the airport, so all the fiddly plot bits are still in my head. The reason why the Gentleman kills Vinculus is that he summons himself (and Stephen) to "the person whose existence is the greatest threat to him" and they end up near Vinculus. She doesn't explain it though, so it's probably something in Vinculus' tattoos that threatens the livelihood of Gentleman/fairies -- or maybe it was all one big scheme of the Raven King. Either way, it actually that works out well for Childermass plottings, as it would then make sense that he, as Vinculus' keeper, could be targetted by the Gentleman! :D

... did any of that make any sense.

We can scheme up some way for Strange to want to come into contact with Childermass though... unless it works the other way, and Childermass tries to get in contact with him for advice? Strange would likely be preferable to Norrell.

OH! btw, my AIM name is rockrates -- I'll be on sometime this week, if not tomorrow, so I'll give a shout if I catch you. :D We can leave things suitably vague until we get a Gentleman proper, but we can still do dream shenanigans.
