Rules

CANON

In order to join, players must have entirely read Susanna Clarke's novel Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. Susanna Clarke's other works (including The Ladies of Grace Adieu) will be ignored in this game's canon.

DRAMA

RP drama is inevitable. However, this doesn't mean disputes can't be handled civilly and between players. If players are unable to end a dispute between themselves, they should contact the moderators at therevivalmods@gmail.com. Players at the root of or constantly involved in drama will receive two warnings and be banned on the third offense.

OOC/MARY SUES/GODMODDING

Players need to be sure they have a firm idea of their character's personality and the time period before applying. If a player continuously steps out of character, the player will receive two warnings before being removed from the game on the third offense.

Mary Sues/Gary Stus and godmodding are not allowed. If either are seen happening with a character, the player will receive two warnings before being removed from the game on the third offense.

SPELLING/GRAMMAR

Both spelling and grammar are important, so looking over your post before hitting submit never hurts. If you use Firefox, there should be an inline spellchecker already installed on your browser. With this, your browser will point out misspelled words as you type, à la Microsoft Word. This should successfully prevent a majority of spelling issues.

CHARACTERS

Upon being accepted, make sure to post your application. Character profiles help other players to understand your character and better develop their characters' relationship with your own, so this is essential! If your profile still hasn't been posted after a week of your acceptance, it could result in your dismissal from the game.

Players are only allowed three characters max and one hold when first applying. Additional characters are reserved solely for extremely active players.

If you already have three characters in play, one must be dropped to take on another. While you will be able to keep these characters over a grace period while applying, one of your previous three characters must then be dropped from play after acceptance.

Additionally, players cannot play two characters that would interact regularly (ex: friends, spouses, etc.).

ACTIVITY

Players are expected to post at least once per week. Activity checks will occur every other Sunday and a list will be posted on the mod journal of inactive character journals that need to post or risk removal. Players who have not made a post or participated in a thread within the week will be removed on Sunday without exception unless on hiatus. Players that appear on the inactivity list two consecutive times (meaning they did not post the majority of the month) may be dismissed from the game.

Hiatuses are allowed for up to two weeks (although one week is preferred). A hiatus lasting for more than three weeks (as well as constant hiatuses) could result in your dismissal from the game. However, this will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis (constantly being busy with school is a lot different than not having access to a computer for a certain length of time).

SHIPPING

Slash, het, and femmeslash are all permitted. However, there should be no tilt towards any particular orientation. Keep in mind if your character is anything other than heterosexual that gay relationships were not as accepted as they are today and should be played as such. So, no characters with rainbow stickers attached to their belongings.

Also, bear in mind that character relationships need to be born of an agreement between both players, as well as believable (enemies aren't just going to hook up in two days). Meaningful relationships spawn out of friendship and time before anything else.

PBS

PBs should be as close to canon as possible, although minor details (such as eye or hair color -- please don't alter them!) can be overlooked. Additionally, there should be a suitable amount of clear icons for your character.

PLOT

While The Revival of English Magic is meant to be primarily player-driven, a pervasive storyline may eventually be created with player plots in mind.

Major plots (death, rape, and pregnancy) should be run by the mods.

JOURNALS

Strike-outs are readable whereas bolded strike-outs are not. Privated text should be formatted as follows:

[Private to Recipient's Name Here¹]

Text here.

[/Private]

Strikeout

Bolded

Privating

web counter

It should always be assumed, unless stated otherwise, that if a private is not addressed to your character (s)he cannot break the ward.

¹Make sure to clarify the recipient(s). Saying something like "close friends" is too vague. Instead, list the names of those the private is addressed to.

THREADS

Thread headings should be formatted as follows (deleting and replacing what's in brackets with the correct information):

Characters: [Who's involved this scene.]
Setting: [Where and when the scene is occurring.]
Content: [For simplicity's sake, you can just use 'No Adult Content'/Worksafe or 'Adult Content'/Not Work Safe. Adult Content is, of course, graphic sex or violence. State which (graphic sex or violence) applies to a post labeled with Adult Content.]
Summary: [A short summary of the scene. Maybe what it's trying to achieve, what spawned it into being, etc.]
